Meet Your Holistic Practitioners – Art of Nursing Midwifery

September 16, 2011

Amy Tinney, RN, LM and Sarah Shealy, RN, CNM

I would love for you to be my patient, but sometimes, you may need to see someone else other than me. Whether your condition is out of my scope of practice, or I just think a different approach or practitioner will be a better fit or complimentary to what we’re doing, I often refer patients to other great practitioners – big bonus if that practitioner is holistic-minded.

I like to think of good practitioners as an extension of my own tool box. When I need more support (either personally or professionally), I reach into my kit and find the right modality and practitioner to fit my needs. I encourage you to to the same.

What is a holistic practitioner?

Holistic health is about looking at the big picture, not just slapping a bandaid on every issue. A holistic practitioner takes into consideration the whole person – mind, body, spirit – when considering a person’s condition, diagnosis, and treatment. Holistic treatments aim to address the symptoms as well as the root cause of an issue whether it be neck pain, digestive upset, or an autoimmune condition. Holistic practitioners tend to guide a patient to wellness and self-healing rather than just trying to offer a quick fix for things that aren’t working.

So, I’d like to introduce you to some skilled and compassionate practitioners I know.

This week, meet the midwifery team of Art of Nursing: Amy Tinney, RN, LM and Sarah Shealy, RN, CNM.

Over 21 years of experience with women and babies and an inner knowledge of labor and birth in all settings…combined thousands of births both in and out of hospital…and our nursing background.

What do you love about your practice?

We give exceptional individualized care to all kinds of women and families and our team works well together to give the best outcome for the mom, baby and family.  As midwifery partners, we are so aligned in our philosophy and approach that working together is a pleasure and a blessing.  Being able to walk with families through their birthing and parenting journey is an extraordinary privilege.

Birth Tub

The most common conditions you treat?

As Midwives and nurses we provide full – scope midwifery care meaning both well women care and perinatal care for families planning home birth or hospital birth. This includes complete holistic pre-natal care, labor and homebirth care, postpartum care, lactation support and consultation. Our goal is to guide families to an empowering birth experience in any setting and an empowered start to parenting. We also offer concurrent prenatal care to high risk women and can attend women for their birth in the hospital as a Doula Monitrice. Our background in nursing and nurse-midwifery gives us a very keen sense to know “normal” from “not normal.”  We utilize many modalities to address things that may not be normal with both natural remedies and medications as needed. Our holistic pre-natal midwifery care includes nutritional, emotional and spiritual guidance.

We also provide routine gynecological care, conscious conception, including intra-vaginal artificial insemination as well as birth control options including but not limited to natural methods and IUD placement. While in the care of Art of Nursing Midwives,  you can expect that you will have your needs met by our providers in a comfortable, home-like environment and you will know what to expect from us as a team at all times.

Sarah and an Expecting Mama

Your favorite success story:

All of our clients and their amazing, beautiful children have their own success stories. It’s always a success when a family has a beautiful, empowering birth no matter where it needs to be.

Your secret to your own health and well being:

Amy: Nutrition and a variety of non-traditional modalities ranging from weekly Acupuncture with Emily to Cranio sacral therapy and chiropractic, massage and a balance between living and working…And loving what you do no matter what it is.

Sarah:  Nutrition, exercise, laughter, love. My most precious health practice is time with my daughters laughing and cooking, dancing, biking, eating and reading.  Acupuncture is my go-to whenever I sense the slightest imbalance in my system, and Ms. Emily Bartlett is most talented with the needles and herb blends.  Thanks to Em, we are rarely sick even with our crazy schedules.

Your Favorite Health food:

Amy: Salad with a variety of nuts, seeds, hemp seeds and a home made salad dressing, topped with either grilled chicken or fish. Bone broth is a nice addition as well.

Sarah: Sushi, cabbage salad with cider vinegar, homemade green smoothies.

We all have one – what’s your guilty pleasure?

Amy: Shopping at whole foods. Walking on the beach with my toes in the sand and enjoying the peace of my home office when nobody is around.

Sarah: Chocolate, coffee, and reading the New York Times in bed.

Thanks, Amy and Sarah!

Please email me at emily AT holistickid dot com with the answers to the above questions (at the very top of the post), and a minimum of five photos (more is better).

Some ideas for photos:

At least one photo of yourself, ideally in your office, possibly working with a patient, candid preferred – we want to see the real you, not the press-release version of you!

A photo of your favorite tools of trade.

Show us your personal side – hobby, sport, favorite place, or something that makes you human.

And no, you don’t have be local to Los Angeles to be included – we’d love to meet Holistic Kid practitioners around the globe!
